When will all this madness end? Our President at the University has said publicly that the debate was over and the Unviersity was not going to make any waves over the issue. Well Mr. Skorton the debate isnt over at a national level, weather the U. of I likes it or not. So it seems the national media is going to keep attention on this until something is done. Major news outlets like ESPN has run two separtate stories within the last two weeks regarding the situation at the U. So is the university supporting sexism or is this only a tradition.

Keepin' On

The job of the media is to report the news no matter the circumstance. This situation is no different than any other media event. Although, this is a normal media situation except the media is doing a great job of keeping the locker room discussion alive even though the University has said they are out of the discussion. The media will not let this discussion die. What is the reason for this? I believe the reason the media has prolonged this discussion is because their are so many doubters of the pink locker room that those opponents will not the issue die. The high ups in media organizations allow for programming to come into homes on a discussion that is very volatile. The media darlings within this argument have gained a lot of credibility and will be looked for in the future to be experts on the study of feminism in male sports locker rooms.

The Media

Some have argued that the modern day press has forgotten about the brilliant ideas and once vision of Thomas Paine. Ideas such as the concept of the uncensored flow of ideas and the idea that people should control their own lives. Many have suggested that citizens should be able to spread their honest opinions through the internet and new media and that the net offeres a vast, diverse, and passionate global means of transmitting ideas and opening minds. This was part of the political transformation some envisioned. Through media we could advance human rights, spread democracy and ideas to allow fearless argument to challenge and question authority. Blogs are a good illustration of this new media that allows for free speech and the flow of opinionated infomation.

A theory about women

Happy Thanksgiving!!
While researching for this project I found that there are certain theories that help in understanding the way that women are portrayed. Standpoint theories claim to represent the world from a particular socially stiuated persepecitve that can lay a claim to epistemic privilege or authority. This theory becomes controversial when they claim privilege over socially and politically contested topics on behalf of the perspectives of systemically disadvantaged social groups, relative to the perspectives of the groups that dominate them.
I think that this is the we way that women see the issue. Women have felt oppressed and I think that the law professor is feeling the same way. This issue has nothing to do with someone feeling oppressed and being a so called "disadvanated group". Do women really feel disadvantaged by the locker room being pink? I know that as a women I am not really offended because a color seems to be just a color anymore.
This issue is has been discussed in many forms but still there is no real solution to what has happened. The University should look into it further and not silence anyone's thoughts and feelings over the issue. Besides Iowa City is known for diverstiy and their are willing to accept homosexuals and various other opinions about them. Does the University have something against homosexuals? I feel at this point is almost like beating a dead horse and the issue will probably not be solved any time soon.
Have a great Holiday!!

Dualistic reporting going under

One of this morning's top stories is of Ted Koppel's decision to quit (or so they say) the late night ABC show, 'Nightline'. In 2002 ABC secretly recruited David Letterman to fill the time slot, but the escapade ended in embarassment when Letterman decided to stay at CBS. Nightline's ratings were at an all time low as of last night's last Nightline episode with Koppel. Personally, I believe with (probably) many others that Koppel decided to get out before ABC decided to let him go. What I think is relevant to this event is the way news is now being reported. Nightline (along with many other news outlets) approaches news from a dualistic manner. Both sides are presented, and then that's it. No investigation on middle ground, who may be right, what doesn't make sense, etc. Awhile ago, Koppel interviewed Jon Stewart on why The Daily Show's ratings were up while his were going down (well that's what was implied, anyway). Stewart's response to Koppel was that he does not give the audience what they want. Dualistic reporting is so dull and people do not know who or what to believe. Stewart takes the news investigates what may or may not be wrong with it. Yes, he uses humor to sustain an audience, but Stewart does not believe that is why people listen to his side of the news. People want more than what the mainstream media (Koppel) is giving them. I have to agree with Stewart, and the evidence is now available. Koppel is done with Nightline, and the American people have succeeded in sending a message that they want more than dualistic reporting. This blog is trying also to engage in more investigative reporting within the issue of the pink locker room, because the mainstream media did not do a well enough job the first time around.

Death Threats

After posting in her blog that she was against the pink locker room, Erin Buzuvis received nearly 174 comments in defense of the pink locker room. In those comments she also received many death threats. "It is deeply offensive and completely unacceptable that a spirited public discussion about the pink locker rooms at Kinnick Stadium has been degraded by threats of violence," President Skorton commented in a statement. Skorton assigned the Office of the General Councel, the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, and the UI police to review the threats and to take the appropriate actions based on their findings. Ben Miraski starts off by stating that "When I was younger and would go to another school for basketball games, it was common for us to be assigned to the women's locker room. Most high school teams do not have more than one guy's locker room so they would often use the women's. No one thought anything of the more feminine decor." I found this to be interesting since at an earlier age people often use the other sex's locker room and it was not an issue. But who knows what the women's locker room looked like? Does this have to do with ones maturity level?
He also states that the most amazing thing about this is that it is not the visiting teams complaining. I found this blog appealing because he has some of the same thoughts and complaints that many people feel it is not worth wasting our time over. Mr. Miraski opinion towards the whole issue has to do more with timing than anything else. He wonders if this would be an issue if the team were 4-0 now and tied for the Big Ten lead. ( This is as of September 28, 2005). Timing was a key factor but many people do not know what to think anymore. What could be a better way to solve this issue? Is there a better way or should we just forget about other's opinions and stick with tradition?

The Issue of Objectivity

On October 18, 2005 in class we discussed the issue of objectivity and the effects that is has with the media. Chad Raphael discusses objectivity and the effect it has on the media. He states "Jouralists and news organizations exercise their powers of selecting news. Without some critieria for what makes an event or person important or interesting enought to cover, journalists would have no way of choosing among the countless happenings that occur every day." So my question is what makes the pink locker room controversy receive national attention? Why did news organizations choose to cover this story and better yet why did ESPN talk about it?
In class we also discussed the issue of sense-making meaning that people have some sort of knowledge of an event to actually understand the meaning behind it. Also, the issue of size is equal to power. The size of the University has a larger impact on how the media portrays events that pertain to the University. A few voices speaking out on an issue is not going to have enough impact to hurt a major University. Again, did the issue get blown out of portion or do we really need to consider the few voices that are against the locker room. To achieve a better democracy we should all have our voices heard and not silenced.

Who's Buckman?

At today's game, people were handing out pink t-shirts (for free) to anyone who wanted them. On the shirt it said, "Who's Buckman?" The people handing out the shirts would not give away the answer to this question. I even saw a plane fly overhead with the phrase. I am assuming this may be related to the pink locker room issue, or maybe not. Does anyone know more about these free shirts, or who Buckman really is? I saw one guy with the 'Who's' crossed out and written in it's place 'I'm'. I'm guessing that's not the real Buckman. Any possible answers to this scenario?

Who loves the Daily Show?

Why is Jon Stewart so popular? Why are more people listening to him rather than the mainstream media? The answer lies not in his humor, but investigative journalism. Today, the mainstream media gives us two sides. You can be either for something or against something. The news reports on these two sides and then their jobs are finished. No explaination needed for the mainstream media. The Daily Show understands that audiences need something more. They want to know more about these sides, they want investigation into the events! This is what Stewart gives us, in a slightly more humorous version than the mainstream media. This blog is trying to investigate into more sides other than just two for the pink locker room controversy.

BLOGS FOR A CAUSE

International bloggers are
increasingly positioning
themselves as watchdogs
over governments. Great! Wouldn't that solve all our problems? The answer is no. Our focus should be on trying to correct the wrongs that have been done so far. If we leave the argument now, we have two professors who said a couple things and as a result got death and rape threats. I don't care who you are or what you say...everyone is entitled to their own opinion. The threats are what went out of bounds. And instead of having a constructive conversation on what it all meant, we criticized these 'femininsts' and told them to screw off. Yes, the pink locker room is a tradition many of us hold dear to our hearts and it is partly what makes us Hawks. However, I am also a feminist and I don't believe for a second that you can't be both at the same time. There is more to this than being for or against a stupid room. Why can't we make something postive come out of this situation? I would agree with Hawkeye4pink to create some sort of fund raising for breast cancer awareness every October from now on. We can have the pink locker room and support women at the same time. I do not think this issue will be resolved until a solution like this one has been started.

The Media's Role

While being the media watchdog for the pink locker room controversy it became a little more clear what exactly the role is of the media. The issue arose in late summer and even today we are still talking about the issue and it is supposed to be resolved. The media's role in this entire scheme of things is to first and foremost inform the media of the controversy at hand. The issue being shown from both sides is only the objective thing to do, having a fair argument where both sides are getting the correct amount of attention. So what is the media's role this late into the controversy? The media's role at this point can only be to stir up more controversy and recreate the frenzy that already was. The controversy seemed to have had its run of attention and was dormant for a good month until just last week the foremost leader in sports, ESPN did a story on it trying to rile up think pink's opponents and proponents. The huge liberal media is still doing a great job of creating an issue where apparently their isn't one.

The Internet

The internet promotes diverse interests and opinions and blogs can create never-ending conversations of all subject matter. The committee did not believe that it was a question of inequitable treatment of the universities own athletes, which is what the certification looks at in the equity area. However, committee chief Pat Cain thinks that it has raised attention to the gender-equity area. Cain also said that "the walls were irrelevant to the report on its distribution of athletics scholarships." The committee did say, keep in mind, that the issue would be further reviewed on another board. Jill Gaulding, a UI associate law professor who has called for the removal of the pink paint, said "I think some people might be surprised that the issue is not going to be in the NCAA report, but I also think the important thing is that the university continues to consider the matter." Did the committee fool all and report that the university would review the issue further to get past the criticism of not putting the issue in their report to the NCAA? The pink locker room has been around as long as Buzuvis and Gaulding, so what gives them the right to now and only now make a case for it being sexist. This tradition stands for much more than anything that Buzuvis and Gaulding would understand, this stands for Iowa Football and the tradition that this school holds. All the teams, coaches, and students that have gone through this university since the pink locker room began in 1979 have seen the idea as a tradition and have recognized it as so. The sports media figures in this country have an idea of what tradition is and can recognize it when it is present, that same gene that Buzuvis and Gaulding unfortunately don't carry.

How journalism played a part in this issue

According to a class reading on Public Journalism: Saving Democracy and Journalism written by Natalie Hunter states that their are three different types of Journalism models to follow. They are the following: The Market model, the Advocacy model, and the Trustee model. To best understand how journalism has effected the issue we should further look into the Advocacy model.
Hunter states that journalists represent political and social causes and report with clear bias in favor of their respective orientations . Here journalists play the role of what in America would be called "public relations experts" placing the desired spin and slant on the news for their cause or party.
In my understanding this best describes how the University of Iowa took the position. They did not want the issue to become out of hand in any way. The spin and slant of the controversy was played out in silencing the law professors view right away. Is this right in help making a democratic society? Should we silence one side and only hear about one side of the story? In my opinion, I did not know much about this issue right away but after researching more and more I found that the law professors viewpoints were expressed by her stating the same statement over and over. This was not much explanation that the general public received. Why did this happen? Why did the media only restate a few of her quotes in every article that was published? Should we get further information from her to achieve equal balance on both sides?

MEN-We need your help!

When I think about the pink locker room issue, I am reminded of Andrea Dworkin, a prominent feminist. She never wrote about pink locker rooms, but her parallels are still there. In one of her speechs, "I Want a Twenty-Four Hour Truce During Which There is No Rape", she speaks to a group of 500 men. Her argument is that although not all men are rapists, they are the only ones who can stop it. Women do not have the power to stop rape. The men who do not rape, but do nothing about those other men that abuse women, are still guilty of abuse. It is men's job to stand up to other men when confronting issues concerning women's oppression.
From this blog, I have learned that it is mostly men violently objected to people who want the locker room changed. Women are objecting too, only they are not as volitale as men. I do not believe anyone should be subjected to ridicule and threats such as the UI law professors were, no matter who you are. However, women can do nothing to stop it, whether they want to or not. We need men who do not believe threatening is right to stand up for us on the premise that we are human beings!

Pink for a better cause

The timing of this controversy happened at an interesting time. October is known for breast cancer awareness. According to the Chris King Precision Components the color pink are the pink ribbon are recognized as universal symbols of breast cancer awareness and are independent of any organization. They also stated that "pink is considered less feminine and more flavor of the week."
University of Iowa students wore pink shirts to support their stance on this issue. Even local retailors sold pink shirts to help market the students to support the issue. But could we have handled this issue differently and help a better cause?? With knowing that breast cancer was at the same time could we have curved the issue to support women at the same time? We could of put pink ribbons on our shirts to support breast cancer or did some sort of fund-raiser with the issue of pink. Do you think that this could of helped the issue by marketing it in a different way? With this also be offending anyone since it is for something that many people support??

THINK PINK makes the big time!!

Just when the University of Iowa administrators thought they had shook the pink locker room controversy, ESPN does a five minute story on the meaning and the argument it has brought up. The story done by ESPN did a great job of being objective and showing the argument of both sides. To start the story they explained the tradition of Iowa football, and the wit of Coach Hayden Fry, they also gave quotes from players who had been in the visitors locker room who loved the idea. The also took qoutes from Buzuvis and Gaulding explaining why they thought the locker room was sexist and feminist. Given high profile media missteps at places like The New York Times, USA Today and CBS, the press apparently needs somebody to hold it accountable.
That role is increasingly served by bloggers, computer-savvy people who write their musings, rants and reflections in Web logs posted on the Internet.
Web logs are basically electronic journals or diaries, usually with sections for reader comments and links to other sites of interest. They cover various subjects and topics (even pink lockerrooms).

Change in Fashion when it comes to PINK

According to an article that was written in the Daily Texan, pink is considered one of the hottest colors for women but also for men's fashion too. Men of all ages have been spotted wearing pink recently in the United States, leading style experts predict overall change in the history of men's fashion. The article also states that desptie the color's popularity, many men are stil hesitant to cross gender boundaries. Throughout history, pink was something that the common man considered taboo. The increasing amount of homosexuals around the world has possibly played a role in this movement. The last thing the article stated was "So, whether guy or girl, wear your pink and wear it proud." Does this seem to be a problem that more men are starting to accept the color pink and wear it?
At the University of Iowa more and more t-shirts that are printed are not in just black and gold. You can find Iowa clothing in every color. I think that this promotes diversity. Is it strange that retailors sell clothing and accessories in every color? Is this really a concern for people what color of shirt another person is wearing?

Media Reporting

Celeste Condit claims that the media does a poor job in reporting the news. She argues that the media uses a dualistic approach to reporting news. This means that there are only two sides of an issue. However, there are usually many people who have opinions lying somewhere in the middle-ground of that issue. In order to correct this problem, we need a better educational system where argumentation and deliberation are taught.

The controversy over our pink locker room creates many opinions that lie somewhere in the middle-ground, but the media did not report on this. There were only those for or against the the color. What about if you think that the color scheme is degrading to women, but if it helps win games you don't have a problem with it. There are so many middle-ground opinions that get shut out by the media.

Our very language is dualistic in nature. It creates a hero and villian, and therefore, drama exists. This drama is what the media depends on to keep their audience. Did you know this is oppressive to women, whether you realize it or not? I, unfortunately, say it all the time. It can be argued (I'm sure) to be a gender neutral phrase. However, let's stop a moment and really think about it.

Audrey Bliger gives us a definition of internalized oppression: "the subtle process by which members of disenfranchised groups come to accept their own lesser status."

As a woman (or should I say 'womyn') I contribute to my own oppression by using this phrase. No one would walk into a room full of men and say 'hey gals'! So why are women referred to as guys? This is an instance of internalized oppression. We are so used to it that we don't even know it's happening!

If oppression means the difference of one word (guys), isn't the pink locker room something we should consider as well? It seems to me to be an even bigger instance of visualized oppression than one word, which is already stirring up plenty of controversy.

Issue thrown out too soon?

On October 21 University of Iowa President David Skorton decided to take no further action on the pink locker room controversy. Improvements in Web design tools have made it easier for beginners to create their own Web logs and update them as often as they wish, even every five minutes, as this guy was doing. Blogs are thus more dynamic than older-style home pages, more permanent than posts to a Net discussion list. This firestorm was because of this pink locker room at Kinnick Stadium. Even though this pink backdrop has been around for a couple of decades it is only now that it becomes an issue, and a big enough one to become front page material in every local newspaper, around the state. The argument begins with the statement that pink is a "sissy" color which was first said by former U. of Iowa coach Hayden Fry, this statement fueled the debate that the locker room is sexist, towards women creating an uneven playing field for women. Others may argue that tradition takes over and has nothing to do with sexism, all the while it remains and if it helps our hawks by creating an advantage, let it be!

More meaning behind pink

I first off want to say that the pink locker room does not offend me in any way shape or form. I have been a female college student at the University of Iowa for 4 years now and not once has the locker room been an issue until now. Besides, as an fan of Iowa football will I ever even see the visiting team's locker room anyway?
The meaning of pink goes further than just what loverforpink stated. The color pink was not even invented until the 17th century to describe flowers. But in the early 1900's pink was described in Ladies Home Journal as " more decided and stronger" while blue was more "delicate and danty". Times have certainly changed. Not only is the color of pink now associated with women but also with homosexuals and bisexuals and is often in the form of a pink triangle. Like loverfor pink stated.. this symbolism dates back to the Nazi's to label them in prison camps. Back then, it was seen as negative but today many people wear pink with pride.
Another point of view..the way that feminists feel towards the color of pink. Some may think that pink is related to the pre-feminism "old style female" which they test as a symbol of oppression and limitations to that era but some women reclaim the aspects of the old style and think it is something to be proud of.
Does the issue with pink offend more women out there? I am curious and would love to hear what others feel on the issue.

Blogs No Threat to Democracy

Real-life blogs before drawing
on conclusions about
the alleged dangers to democracy
from the Internet, Cass R. One person says one thing and the next thing you know death threats are being sent out. It is okay to have an opinion about a subject, but get all your facts before going ballistic. And even after having the facts, make decisions and act in a tactful manner. Going nuts about something is no way to represent the University of Iowa. Come on, we are educated people--right? Was there no way to adequately handle this situation? I, personally, was not offended about the whole issue until I saw a man at the game wearing a pink shirt saying, "Where's my dinner, bitch?" Constructive criticism I can live with, blatant offense to my social gender role in society (which men created for me) I cannot.
So let's get some facts straight:

Pink has not always been asssociated with females.

It was not until the early 20th century that the female color went from blue to pink. The first people to assign this arbitrary reference was Nazi Germany, it seems we borrowed it from them. <-Does anyone else find this frightening?

The color pink has many arbitrary connotations: womanhood, feminine, innocence, childlike

The literal translation of pink is a color that is slightly lighter and softer, or a version of red

To be: In the pink=healthy / tickled pink=happy, content / pink collar=female office worker

We have all heard the argument regarding Hayden Fry's decision to make the locker room pink, that it would make the other team more passive. I am not here to refute that or say that it was bad. What I do want to do is to discuss why some feminists are offended by it.

Feminism has many different definitions, and not one of them is right or wrong. Many feminists are not bothered at all by the pink locker room, and some are very upset. It depends on one's definition of feminism and one's experiences in life in order to understand why people think as they do.

Adrian Rich coined the term 'revision'. This means to look at things with new eyes; to look at things differently.

Whether or not the locker room should be pink is beyond the point at this time. The university has dropped the issue, probably because we could of had a mass riot on campus were the color to change. Either way, we need to get beyond the pinkness and see the real problem. Women are oppressed everyday in their lives. We need to 'revision' the issue and try to correct the problems that make women feel inferior in this society.

We need YOU!

Each member of this blog is a current University of Iowa student who thinks this issue has not been addressed thoroughly. This blog is dedicated to the controversial pink locker room at Kinnick Stadium on the campus of The University of Iowa.
